Plastic pollution is everywhere. Plastic permeates our surroundings, from the air we breathe in Metro Manila to the pristine waters of Verde Island – supposedly the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. It even finds its way into the food we eat and water we drink, entering our bodies. At every stage of its lifecycle, plastic affects the overall quality of life on Earth – destroying ecosystems, harming people’s health, and accelerating social injustices.
Despite these grave impacts of plastic pollution, companies are poised to significantly increase their production of plastic packaging in the coming decade. If the current trajectory continues, plastic production will triple by 2050. To exacerbate the situation, a staggering 90% of all plastics ever produced have never been recycled. Merely relying on recycling is inadequate to extricate ourselves from this plastic predicament. Equally distressing is the fact that 99% of plastics originate from fossil fuels such as oil. Plastics are literally suffocating the environment, contributing to emissions during production and generating vast amounts of waste in their usage. To: Coca-Cola, PepsiCo., Unilever, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Mondelez, and the world’s biggest plastic polluters
