STOP PRODUCING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC

Plastic pollution is everywhere. Plastic permeates our surroundings, from the air we breathe in Metro Manila to the pristine waters of Verde Island – supposedly  the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. It even finds its way into the food we eat and water we drink, entering our bodies.  At every stage of its lifecycle, plastic affects the overall quality of life on Earth – destroying ecosystems, harming people’s health, and accelerating social injustices.

Despite these grave impacts of plastic pollution, companies are poised to significantly increase their production of plastic packaging in the coming decade. If the current trajectory continues, plastic production will triple by 2050. To exacerbate the situation, a staggering 90% of all plastics ever produced have never been recycled. Merely relying on recycling is inadequate to extricate ourselves from this plastic predicament. Equally distressing is the fact that 99% of plastics originate from fossil fuels such as oil. Plastics are literally suffocating the environment, contributing to emissions during production and generating vast amounts of waste in their usage.

To effectively combat the crisis of plastic pollution, we must address its root cause.

Big corporations like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Unilever, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, and Mondelez bear a huge responsibility in addressing plastic pollution and fixing the mess they made. They inundate us with coffee, soda, chips, candy, shampoo, and soap packaged in disposable plastics, leaving us with no alternative but to discard them. The time has come for these corporations to stop the production of single-use plastics and instead invest in plastic-free alternatives such as reuse and refill systems.

Stand in solidarity with fellow Filipinos and add your name to the growing number of voices demanding that plastic polluters renounce harmful, disposable plastics and embrace sustainable, reuse and refill methods to deliver their products.

Together, let’s urge the world's largest brands to STOP PRODUCING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC.
