STOP SACHETS!

SMALL SACHETS. BIG PROBLEMS.

In the Philippines, where companies aggressively market sachets, the absence of meaningful policies to curb sachet production has led to an estimated 164 millions sachets consumed daily, on top of the long list of other single-use plastics (SUPs) produced by corporations. These SUPs have devastating impacts on our environment and society. Sachets contribute to widespread pollution, from our neighborhoods to our waterways to our oceans. Sachets are everywhere.

Plastic pollution threatens our food supply, contaminating it with microplastics and toxic chemicals. Our health is at risk, as these toxins enter our bodies through the food systems. The livelihoods of millions, particularly those in fishing and tourism industries, are jeopardized by the degradation of our natural resources. Sachet pollution also worsens climate change, with 99% of plastics derived from fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Corporations must take responsibility and phase out sachets. The plastic crisis we face today stems from corporations that have exploited the traditional Filipino practice of 'tingi,' or buying in small quantities. They have created this sachet mess, and now it's their responsibility to resolve it. It is imperative that they urgently initiate a just transition to reuse and refill systems. These sustainable alternatives will significantly reduce plastic waste, protect our environment, and promote a circular economy. Companies must invest in innovative solutions that prioritize the health of our planet and its people over short-term profits. The shift to reusable and refillable packaging is not just a necessity; it is a moral obligation to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

The government has a critical role to play in this transition. Immediate action is required to ban sachets and other SUPs. Legislative measures must be enacted to hold corporations accountable for their plastic production. This includes setting and enforcing time-bound targets for plastic reduction and mandating the adoption of reuse and refill systems. By implementing stringent regulations and creating robust accountability mechanisms, the government can drive significant change and ensure that corporations contribute to a healthier, plastic-free environment.
