PHOTO: Bureau of Customs employee opens a container van of mixed waste illegally imported from South Korea to the Philippines.
Nine container vans of waste from Australia and a 40-foot container van from Hong Kong were discovered in Misamis Oriental.
These are just some in a series of high-profile illegal waste shipments to have been discovered to enter the country in the past few years. These shipments are likely only the tip of the iceberg, and we don’t know if there are other waste shipments that have not yet been discovered.
We will continue to be a dumping ground for waste importations unless the Philippine government bans the entry of foreign waste to our shores and ratifies the Basel Ban Amendment. Illegal waste dumping to developing countries should be stopped at all costs.
Add your name to urge President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to declare a ban on the entry of waste to the Philippines and ratify the Basel Ban Amendment. Let’s tell the world that we are not a garbage dump!
