Excited na kaming ibalita sa’yo ang magaganap na Greenpeace Ship Tour ngayong November! ⛵🌈 But before we dive into the details of this much-anticipated event, let's take a trip down memory lane and look back at the incredible journeys we've shared in the past.
YEAR 2000: TOXIC-FREE ASIA TOUR
The Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior visited the Philippines for the first time, focusing on stopping toxic trade in Asia. We rallied against coal-fired power plants, incineration, and toxic materials left by US bases, which have been harming our environment and communities.
YEAR 2002: CLEAN ENERGY TOUR
The second Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, traveled around Southeast Asia to promote clean energy. We visited the Negros Island provinces to launch the renewable energy revolution. Additionally, in the same year, the Philippine government halted plans for a 50-megawatt coal-fired power station in Pulupandan, Negros.
YEAR 2005: ASIA CLEAN ENERGY REVOLUTION TOUR
Rainbow Warrior visited the Philippines to raise awareness about the then-unfamiliar issue of climate change and campaigned for clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and modern biomass.
YEAR 2008: QUIT COAL TOUR
The "Quit Coal Tour" took us to Panay Island as part of the global campaign against coal, a critical move to reduce carbon emissions. In the same year, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the Renewable Energy Law, intended to accelerate the development and utilization of renewable energy sources in the country.
YEAR 2010: TURN THE TIDE TOUR
Rainbow Warrior returned to the Philippines for the "Turn the Tide Tour," promoting clean, sustainable, and peaceful energy. Local fisherfolk from Sarangani province joined us in a symbolic flotilla to reject coal.
YEAR 2013: OCEAN DEFENDER TOUR
The third Greenpeace ship, the Esperenza (Spanish term for “hope”) highlighted the beauty and richness of the Philippine seas, exposed environmental threats, and called for urgent government action to protect biodiversity.
YEAR 2018: CLIMATE JUSTICE SHIP TOUR
An improved and eco-friendly version of the Rainbow Warrior made its debut in the Philippines, championing climate justice alongside impacted communities in Manila, Guimaras, and Tacloban. The ship served as a platform to amplify the voices of the communities, who were also part of a landmark National Inquiry on Climate Change by the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines. In 2022, the Commission found legal grounds for asserting that oil and gas companies’ climate-destructive activities contribute to human rights harms.
YEAR 2019: SHIP IT BACK TOUR
Rainbow Warrior returned to Manila and Cebu to address the growing issue of plastic pollution, with support from celebrity advocates like Nadine Lustre, Bianca King, and Jun Sabayton. Onboard, officials from Cebu gathered to sign a declaration aiming for the province to achieve 100% plastic-free status, setting an example for other Visayas regions to break free from single-use plastic.
Excited ka na ba sa next chapter ng ating journey? In November, Rainbow Warrior will be back, and this time, we're campaigning for climate action and the need to make big polluters pay for the losses and damages our communities are enduring due to the climate crisis. It's been four years since we last met, and we can't wait to embark on this new adventure together! 🙌
